FRANSCHHOEK CHILDREN’S ATTRACTIONS

The atmosphere is completely relaxed and you will feel you are on holiday even If it is just a drive out from the Cape Town northern suburbs.

THE HISTORICAL MANOR HOUSE

Although the main house's gable is dated 1836, the structure is probably considerably older. Its well-proportioned design could be regarded as a gable that bridges the gap between the more austere neoclassical style and the baroque style. By the gable's date, the style is strictly speaking considered late-neoclassical.

While the public cannot access the historical portions of the farm, they may easily observe the structures when they visit the wine shops, bakery, and art gallery. Reserve a seat during a classical concert to see the Estate Cellar's interior.

STATUE OF THE LADY

This stunning artwork was created in recent times and welcomes guests to the estate. It is reminiscent of the Huguenot Monument's Lady, who represents intellectual and spiritual independence. The monument is now a well-known landmark and popular tourist destination.

STOP 4: DINNER AT BOSCHENDAL

This is a great family venue with a tour of the vegetable gardens available, and the great atmosphere with large well-loved chilckens running between the tables, and enabling children to learn about farming amidst one of South Africa’s treasured heritage gems.

The magnificent H-shaped house is surrounded by an oak forest that is hundreds of years old. The outbuildings are now home to two restaurants, the "Werf restaurant" and the "Deli restaurant," as well as a shop and butchery.

THE DELI RESTAURANT

The Deli restaurant is open for dinner Saturday through Tuesday and serves bistro-style breakfast and lunch. Sunday is pizza night.

THE WERF RESTAURANT

Directly across from the manor house, in the cellar's renovated heritage building, lies the Werf restaurant. Take pleasure in viewing this rare specimen of a true Cape Dutch interior, which is hard to come across these days.

Ethically sourced goods and locally grown produce are promoted, so eating here benefits the community. Viewable from your table, the vast Werf Food Garden is the source of many of the ingredients. Black Angus Beef and Forest Reared Duroc Pork are two of the restaurant's specialties.

ACTIVITIES ON THE FARM

Explore the vast herb gardens and orchards with a guide. This is a perennially popular location for weddings, and the werf now caters for picnics. You can rent bicycles from the trail center and ride the farm's trails.

MANOR HOME AT BOSCHENDAL

The manor house features green-painted round-topped windows. The shutters on all the lower windows are functional. Currently acting as the hub for all agricultural operations, the mansion occasionally hosts public tours during art exhibits and other events, showcasing its opulent interior and timbered ceilings.

Fifteen years younger than its neighbour at Rhone, the gable is dated 1810. A noteworthy discovery made during a restoration project in the 1970s was the discovery of the foundations of an earlier T-shaped building. Over the years, the farm's owners and caretakers have lovingly restored the structures, making them accessible to both local and distant guests.

Reinvesting in the surroundings and local community is their priority.

Visit GLITZYMAGAZINE to see more exciting things to do in Cape Town and the surrounding Wineland region.

Located on the R310 from Stellenbosch, many tourists miss this historical farmhouse on their travels to the more famous Boschendal Manor. However, it is in fact arguably the more photogenic of the twin buildings which were built very near to each other and are accessible from the same entrance. Just turn right when at the main entrance to Boschendal Estate.

The two buildings are both owned by Anglo American Farms, and Rhone is in use by Rhodes fruit farms. The interior, although not accessible to the public, has been immaculately refurbished under the direction of architect Gabriel Fagan, an is now in use for the company’s public relations office.

A large circular driveway encloses a perfectly level lawn, and roses surround it. This is a magical and unspoilt example of the Cape Dutch architecture style and gardens at its finest.

The gable is dated 1795 and is a beautiful example of the early-neoclassical period. It has four full windows and two half windows that are mirrored about the central front door with its fanlight. Like Boschendal, the windows have flat arches at the top, however the finish is varnished timber, rather than painted green. Shutters are absent. A stoep made out of bricks encircles the entire house creating a type of low platform for it.

A large oak tree to the side, and the mountains behind, contribute to the perfect scene. Your camera will love this building as much as you love being here!

On Sundays, the Rhone Restaurant serves a buffet lunch with traditional cuisine from the Cape. For reservations on other days, call ahead; parties larger than 20 can be accommodated. This location in the Banghoek valley, at the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein mountain, is a serenely lovely spot to take in the breathtaking scenery.

Over the years, the farm's owners and caretakers have lovingly restored the structures, making them accessible to both local and distant guests.

All of its stakeholders have a strong commitment to giving back to the local community and environment, and they work with other like-minded farms in the area to maintain the area's beauty and appeal.

Fabulous views and wine tasting are of course also available. Bread sticks are the main snack, so make this a tea time stop in-between your eating venues.

Even though the cellar's gable dates from 1988, its design seems like out of a history book, and when combined with the spotless topiary gardens that lead up to its entrance, it's a must-see sight. The cellar's guardian lions are just two of the many sculptures created by renowned South African sculptors. It is renowned all over the world for being a pioneer in the production of Leeu Passant Franschhoek Old Vines Lotter Cinsault, its hallmark wine. THE HISTORY

The slave bell's date of construction is roughly 1748, when the gable was first constructed. After being destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in 1931. The well-kept lawn in front of the main house is enclosed by a ring wall, and it is flanked by outbuildings that flare out, giving the impression that the main entrance gates are farther away than they actually are.

THE BAKERY & RESTAURANT

In addition to serving baked products, this second restaurant serves Italian and other specialty dishes on certain weak days. Enjoy croissants, breads and pastries to proper French recipes.

SAMPLING WINE AND MORE

Wine tasting at Babylonstoren is an educational experience, with an audiovisual guide outlining the procedure and what makes the farm's wines unique. Make sure to sample the on-site produced balsamic vinegar and olive oil as well.

THE SPA, FUNCTION VENUE, AND HOTEL

A hotel gives visitors the chance to dwell amid the grounds and take advantage of the farm's many unique nature excursions. Enjoy a spa treatment or reserve the Wheat Barn or Old Cellar for a gathering.
