WINE FARMS ARE CHILDREN FRIENDLY

Many of the wine farms that are open to the public, have transformed themselves into family friendly venues. Often located in pristine countryside locations, these make very relaxing weekend outings for families living in and around Cape Town.


1. THE V & A WATERFRONT

ACTIVITIES ABOUND FOR KIDS AT THE WATERFRONT
Right in the heart of Cape Town, the waterfront it the top desination for tourists, but did you know that there are also many fun things for kids to do, while their parents enjoy the waterfront? Seen here, the Jolly Rodger pirate ship. This is your kids chance to pretend they are a pirate - with lots of real ships to aid the imagination!

RIDE ON A PIRATE SHIP


Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to ride on a pirate ship. The Jolly Roger is the Victoria and Alfred's very own pirate ship that sails aroudn the harbour.




KIDS PLAYZONE


There is a fantastic play area at the V & A waterfront. It is beautifuly themed on ships and the sea - find it right next to the food court.




SEE FISH, RAYS AND SHARKS


This is a full morning's outing all on its own. The Two Oceans Aquarium at the V & A waterfront is a great educational opportunity for adults and children alike that will make them appreciate all the wonders of marine life, and how we can all play our role in protecting it.






2. STODELS GARDEN CENTRE BELLVILLE

FREE ENTRY TO LOTS OF FUN
You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of things for kids to do at what is essentially a plant store. From trampolines, to jumping castles to feeding the lamas... This truly family friendly venue is very casual, but has the feeling of a permanent fun fair / zoo... two places that kids don't often get to go to these days. The Green Leaf Cafe looks like it is inside of a train and has an outdoor area under shady leafy trees. If you end up spending some money on plants on the way out - that will be money well spent, and revenue for stodels well-deserved.





SLIDE AT STODELS


A variety of jungle gyms made of both metal and wood are available. Swings, trampolines and sand-pits are all arranged in a casual design around the restaurant. In summer there is plenty of shade, so the little ones won't get burnt.




FEED FARM ANIMALS


The farmyard area is kept nice and clean, and the low fences make contact with the animals easier. Feeding materials are avaible at a very small cost, and kids can give lettuce and carrots to rabbits, chickens, sheep, pigs and lamas! There is also a monkey cage that kids will love to see.



3. POLKADRAAI STRAWBERRY FARM

STRAWBERRY PICKING AND MUCH MORE
Located on the M12 between Kuilsriver and Stellenbosch, this fantastic family friendly farm gives children and adults a chance to pick strawberries on a real farm - and eat them afterwards. In an era where kids thing food comes from shops, it provides valuable connection for children with the land from which everything comes. With a huge amount of jungle gyms and a friendly take-away type eating area, the whole family will feel relaxed.





STRAWBERRY PICKING


The main activity is picking strawberries from a real farm. You pay per bucket and get to keep whatever you pick that fits in the bucket.

A well designed series of jungle gyms is divided up for chidren of different ages.

PLAYALOT
Playalot near Cape Gate is the ultimate indoor playpark that is a dream come true for most kids. Located in Somerset West, Wild Wild WEST is ideal for rainy days and overhot days. The covered play equipment is surrounded by paintings of scenes from the Wild West and is an innovative and exciting play venue.

9. ZIP-LINING AT ELGIN RIVER LODGE
Cape Town and Winelands is great for outdoor activities. The mild autumn and spring weather, makes this the best time to head to a great park, wine farm or nature reserve to enjoy canoeing, zip-lining or hiking.






CYCLING AT BLAAUWKLIPPEN ESTATE


Rent an bicycle an enjoy cylcing on the esate or on the dedicated ramping area. Also available at the wine tasting centre - a jungle gym with kid's zip-lining equipment.





HORSE RIDING AT BELLA VALLE


Bella Valle is one of the best places to take kids horse riding, as they provide all the equipment and you can pay one session at a time to see if your kid is interested in the sport. Interacting with these amazing animals, who are twice their size, will inspire courage in your youngster and teach them valuable lessons about taking care of others and takig responsiblity. Polkadraai strawberry farm, and Bubz playpark are two other locations that offer pony rides and horse rides for children.





BOOGIE BOARDING

OUTDOOR PLAYPARK AT VERGELEGEN


The playground at Vergelegen Wine Farm has a unique design that complements the property's historic charm. The swing sets, slides, tunnels, and tree houses will encourage families to spend time together in a natural setting that is not overly marketed. The Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West is a fantastic place to bring kids because of its expansive strolling area that displays the different plant climatic zones. A number of historic structures in the Cape Dutch architecture sit amidst beautifully manicured grounds. Museums and old buildings abound, providing our kids with invaluable historical context. The Stables Restaurant serves pizza alongside popular South African meals like Babotie and steaks. Patrons of the eatery are welcome to use the thoughtfully constructed playground. For the price of a little entry and a meal out, you may enjoy this one-of-a-kind park in a beautiful setting.




HIKING AT HELDERBERG NATURE RESERVE


Ascending the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains is possible on shorter hikes that last no more than an hour. Be cautious not to climb all the way up unless you are a seasoned climber in a group; there are paths that lead to the summit and we do not recommend these for children. A charming marsh bordered by a wooden boardwalk lies within the foothills. Children may enjoy taking a leisurely stroll around the terrace that surrounds this natural wetland, which features numerous ducks and bird shelters where they may observe the weavers in action. Learn about the distinctive fynbos, reed, and bullrush plants and animals that call this area home. In order to make your stay more comfortable and educational, the restaurant and tourist office are here for you. There is plenty of room for families to enjoy a picnic, play soccer, and use the park's wooden jungle gyms. Your child will reestablish a connection with nature on this budget-friendly adventure.
